The First Sunday of Advent

“Let every heart prepare Him room . . .” From Joy to the World by Isaac Watts

I am never prepared for the first Sunday of Advent. I’m recovering from Thanksgiving! My mind is on leftovers, not pulling out the Christmas decorations to find the Advent wreath. (Hmm, maybe I should store the Advent wreath with the autumn decorations.)

Advent is not just about decorating my home for Christmas. Advent is the season to prepare my heart to receive Christ. Taking time to look inside myself and see what clutter I’ve allowed to come between me and God. Time to confess where bitterness or unforgiveness has hardened my heart. Time to ask God to help me prepare for the coming of His Son.

As we light the first candle of Advent, let us pray:

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. (Psalm 51:10)
